ExploreIf .htaccess rules are not working on an Apache server, first verify that the file is in the correct document root and that Apache is allowed to read it. Then test the rule by itself with a new request and the error log entry that matches the test time. On shared hosting, these checks may be limited to panel and support access; on a managed server, the virtual host configuration must also be examined.
.htaccess is a local configuration file that Apache can read while handling requests to a specific directory. However, the file’s existence alone is not sufficient. If AllowOverride is disabled for the relevant directory in the administrator configuration, or only certain directives are allowed, the rules may be ignored or the server may return an error.
The first distinction is the environment type. On shared hosting, you can check the document root and file name through the file manager, FTP, or hosting panel, but you cannot change Apache settings such as AllowOverride. On a VDS or dedicated server, if you have administrator access, the virtual host configuration, enabled modules, and Apache’s relevant error log also need to be evaluated. The same symptom does not require the same solution in these two environments.
.htaccess content or use the panel’s versioning or backup feature. This allows you to return to the previous state after an unsuccessful attempt..htaccess; .htaccess.txt or an incorrect subdirectory will not have the same effect. If it is located in the directory opened by the application’s domain, try the test URL again. For an application in a subdirectory, the rule may need to be in the appropriate directory reached by the request rather than in the parent directory.Directory section and whether the rewrite module is enabled. If AllowOverride is disabled, editing only the .htaccess file will not solve the problem; the relevant setting must be enabled in accordance with the server policy, or the rule must be moved to the virtual host configuration. On shared hosting, it is safer to pass this finding to the provider; do not try to change the main configuration. For example, suppose a hypothetical WordPress installation is in a subdirectory and links return 404 when the home page is opened. If you determine that the .htaccess file needs to be in the application’s subdirectory rather than in the domain’s document root, it is sensible to move the file to the correct directory and test only the relevant rule. If, after the test, the log records a new request reaching the application rather than a syntax error, the initial location problem has been resolved; if the 404 continues, the subdirectory path or the application’s redirect setting should now be examined. This observation alone is not evidence for blaming write permissions or PHP settings.
If the error log explicitly says that a directive is not recognized, check whether the module used by the rule is enabled and which directives the hosting plan permits. By contrast, if no new Apache error is created and the request goes directly to the application, the file is most likely in the wrong location, its name is not being read correctly, or the override policy is disabling it. Separating these three possibilities in order is safer than rewriting the entire file.
If the new test produces a 500 error, preserve the original content before removing the rule you most recently added; undo only the latest change and try the same URL again. If the error disappears, it is associated with that rule’s syntax or an unsupported directive. If the error continues, do not change the reverted setting again, and provide your administrator with the new time-stamped log entry, the environment type, and the test URL.
If you manage the server configuration yourself, first verify that the AllowOverride and module status comply with your organization’s policy; disabling security checks or granting broad permissions to all directories in a production environment is not a solution. When comparing infrastructure options for an Apache change that requires administrator access, you may use the server rental options page only to review the relevant service options. The immediate next step is to reproduce the same failed request and match the file location with the new error-log entry.
